He is cardboard cut-out and does nothing to help develop the other characters. He simply exists to provide comic relief and for plot purposes. Dustin Henderson (Gaten Matarazzo) fares slightly better but still falls short in most areas. He is kindhearted and good natured but he does not stand out as a compelling individual. Lucas Sinclair (Caleb McLaughlin) is also fairly one-dimensional but he has potential because he is troubled by his past. Lastly, we have Joyce Byers (Winona Ryder), who unfortunately spends most of her time screaming or being irrational. She is incredibly annoying and does not add anything meaningful to the story.
